Pop-sensation Britney Spears admitted in Court that she has had “enough”, and “wants her life back.”
Britney Spears’ seemingly controlling conservatorship has long been contested by her and her dedicated fan. The star appeared before the Los Angeles court for the first time via a video. She went on to give a harrowing account of how “abusive” her father’s control over life is.
The said conservatorship was granted to Jamie Spears, Britney’s father, back in 2008. This gave Britney’s father control over her financial, personal, and public life. She reeled back to stardom under this conservatorship, but abruptly put performances on hold two years ago. Even though she cited her father’s poor health as the reason, she has since come all out against the oppressive hold her conservators have had over her, for the past 13 years. In the emotional address, she said she “deserves to have a life.”
She has also accused her father of denying her request to remove a contraceptive device. Spears said that she wanted to have a child with her boyfriend, but was unable to do so. She is also forcibly been put on a psychiatric drug, Spears claims. The drug, lithium, has made her feel “drunken” and reportedly unable to talk. In her 20 minute-long address, Spears continued to launch more serious accusations at her father.
The release of the New York Times’ ‘Framing Britney Spears’ documentary had thrown some much-needed light on Spears’s miserable state. The public began to pick up that Britney had almost no control over any aspect of her life. Both the documentary and the Free Britney campaign have gathered lots of support for the pop star. Fans have long called for her freedom, deeply concerned about her well-being. They argue that a conservatorship is an option for a person when he/she has absolutely no capacity to manage their life.
The global pop icon has had a long and eventful career. With continued support from fans and now celebrities, a long process still awaits the much-loved star in her quest to be free.
