Droupadi Murmu: The Youngest and the First Tribal Woman President Of India

Former Governor of Jharkhand, Droupadi Murmu has secured a landslide victory over the opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha to become the 15th President of the country. After being sworn in, she will become the first tribal woman to occupy this position in Indian history. She will also be only the second woman President, after Pratibha Patil and at 65, is the youngest ever.

The first round of counting, which started at 11 am on Thursday, saw Murmu surge ahead. She secured 540 of 748 valid votes, with a value of 3,78,000, while Sinha got 208, with a value of 1,45,600. She continued to maintain her lead by a huge margin even after the second round. Out of 1138 valid votes, she bagged 809, while Sinha stood at 329.

Murmu belongs to the Mayurbhanj district in Odisha. She is a part of the Santhal or Santal community – the third largest scheduled tribe community in India. She worked as a teacher before stepping into politics as the vice-chairman of the Rairangpur NAC. Murmu was the recipient of the Odisha Legislative Assembly’s Best MLA of the Year 2007 Award. In 2015, she became Jharkhand’s first woman governor. She is also the first tribal leader and Odia woman to become the governer of an Indian state and serve her complete term. Now, she is once again set to make history after winning the presidential elections.

Her supporters awaited her victory eagerly all over the country, and celebrations commenced in full swing even before the declaration of the result. ANI reported that celebrations began at SLS (Shyam, Laxman & Sipun) Memorial Residential School in Pahadpur, Odisha, which Murmu has founded.
