Regardless of whether you are a professional runner or an amateur, marathons are a fun way to maintain your fitness while often contributing to a good cause. Marathon tourism in India used to be an unexplored field; though, over the last couple of decades, there have been many runs organized across the country that have attracted global attention. We’ve rounded up a list of eight Indian marathons you can participate in, in the upcoming months, in your city.
1. Adani Ahmedabad Marathon

The Adani Ahmedabad Marathon, an Adani Group initiative, is dedicated to India’s Armed Forces. The race was inaugurated in November 2017. Full marathon, half marathon, 10 km, and 5 km runs are available. Post-COVID, it was the first to organise a physical event by devising time-slot-based systems that allowed over 8,000 runners to participate in the 2021 event over two days while adhering to COVID guidelines. Every year, over 1,000 defense personnel (Air Force, Army, and Navy) take part in the run. A significant portion of the proceeds benefits the Indian Armed Forces.

2. Goa River Marathon
The SKF Goa River Marathon is a 42.195 km run alongside the Zuari river in Goa. The 12th edition of the event will be held on December 11, 2022. The National Geographic Traveller has ranked it as one of the 10 Great Marathons in the world. It has three categories- Full Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10 km run.

3. Pune International Marathon

The Pune International Marathon is an annual marathon foot-race held that debuted in 1983. This year will be the 36th Edition of the run. It became the first Indian race to be certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races. The race has 13 categories and has attracted participants from all over the world. The event has a special theme every year, donating to different causes and charities.

4. Tata Mumbai Marathon

he Mumbai Marathon is an annual international marathon held on the third Sunday of January in Mumbai, India. It is Asia’s largest marathon as well as the continent’s largest mass-participation sporting event. With a prize pool of US$405000, it is India’s richest race. The race categories include the Full Marathon (42.195 km), Half Marathon (21.097 km), Dream Run (6.6 km), Senior Citizens Race (4.7 km), Champions with Disability category (2.1 km), and Open 10K. In the past 18 years, the event has raised over INR 315.90 crores benefitting more than 700 NGOs.

5. Hero Electric ONE RACE Bhaag Chandigarh Bhaag
An initiative by the Super Sikh Foundation, this race is dedicated to beloved Indian track and field sprinter Milkha Singh and is held yearly on his birthday. The marathon debuted in 2021 and the race’s second edition takes place on November 20, 2022. It will follow the Festival of Humanity | BIB Expo on the 19th. It is a chip-timed professional half-marathon with additional distance categories of 10KM and 5KM. It raises funds for various charities, most notably Khalsa Aid.

6. AU Bank Jaipur Marathon
This international Marathon takes place annually in February for the past 13 years. In 2018, it earned the title of the largest mass sporting event with a record-making 80000 participants. The race offers five categories. These are Marathon (Timed), Half Marathon (Timed), 10K (Timed), 5K (Timed and Dream Run 6K (Non-Timed).

7. Kaveri Trail Marathon
The Kaveri Trail Marathon held every year in Karnataka, is the oldest of its kind in India. It was first held 13 years ago. One can choose to run the marathon, half marathon, 10K, or 5K Run. It was first intended to be a training run for the first edition of the Bangalore Ultra. Starting from the Ranganathittu bird sanctuary, the scenic route offers a variety of wildlife for participants to witness first-hand.

8. Gokarna Half Marathon
This marathon has only had its debut run in February 2022 and offers a scenic route alongside the Gokarna Beach in southwest Karnataka. Mark your calenders for the second edition of the marathon on February 5, 2023. The event offers 3 races, the 5k, 10k, and the 21k. It is a great route for both walkers as well as professional runners.
